Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) causes no side effects in most people. Some people taking HCTZ report these symptoms:

  • Muscle weakness
  • Feelings of fatigue or tiredness
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Digestive problems, such as nausea, abdominal pain, constipation

Most studies just report the symptoms people had when taking HCTZ. They didn’t compare this data with similar people who were not taking HCTZ. This makes it hard to know if the symptoms were due to the medicine or some other cause such as a cold.

Most people taking HCTZ have no side effects. When people have side effects on HCTZ, they are almost always minor and don’t cause people to stop treatment. Your doctor will often tell you to wait and see if they go away. Be sure to talk to your doctor about new symptoms you develop, especially when you first start a new medicine or change doses. Although rare, like any medicine, HCTZ can cause a serious allergic reaction.

With HCTZ, fewer side effects make it easier to stick with your daily dose!
