In adults, type 1 diabetes mellitus is much less common than type 2 diabetes. About 34.2 million adults in the US have diabetes. Of these, about 1.4 million have type 1 diabetes while about 32 million have type 2 diabetes.
In children, type 1 diabetes is much more common than type 2. This is because type 1 diabetes usually starts in childhood. About 210,000 people in the US between the age of 10 to 20 years have diabetes. Of these, about 187,000 have type 1.
