For the most part, all types of salt have the same effect on your health. There’s no kind of salt that’s healthier than other types of salt.
Whether you use regular table salt, sea salt, or pink Himalayan salt, they have similar effects on your health. All of these kinds of salt are mostly made up of sodium chloride. They all have very similar amounts of sodium, which is the main part of salt that affects your health. Having too much sodium can raise your blood pressure.
There are a few differences between some kinds of salt. The main differences are that some salt has added iodine, some salt is low-sodium, and less processed salts can have more trace minerals in them. These differences don’t necessarily make these types of salt healthier.
Iodized Salt
Some salt is iodized. That means that it has iodine in it. Some people don’t get enough iodine in their diets, so iodized salt can help them get more. Iodized salt has the same amount of sodium in it as other kinds of salt, so it’s not any better for your blood pressure. But it can help you get more iodine in your diet.
Low-Sodium Salt
Some kinds of low-sodium salt replace some sodium with potassium. These salts have less sodium in them, so they don’t affect blood pressure as much. But the extra potassium in low-sodium salt can cause some side effects, like increasing the risk of getting kidney problems. Talk to your doctor before you try low-sodium salt.
Trace Minerals
Natural salts like sea salt and pink Himalayan salt tend to be less processed than table salt. Because of that, natural salts can have more trace minerals in them like magnesium, calcium, and potassium. They have very little of these minerals in them. So little that it doesn’t have an impact on their nutritive value. Studies have found that all of these types of salt have a similar effect on your health.
For the most part salt is the same, regardless of name!
