It’s up to you when you take your metformin, but you should take it at the same time every day. Metformin should be taken with meals to avoid stomach upset.

There are two types of metformin:

  • Immediate-release, sometimes shortened to IR
  • Extended-release, sometimes shortened to ER or XR

Immediate-release starts working right away. It’s usually taken once or twice a day. Some people who take a high dose may take it three times a day.

Extended-release takes longer to start working and lasts longer in your body. It’s usually taken once a day with dinner.

Try to take your metformin around the same time every day. This can help get you in the habit of taking it, which helps you remember to take your medicine. Some people use pillboxes or an alarm to help remind them when to take their medicine. Do what works for you to stay on schedule.

The same time every day, that’s the way!
