The things that raise your risk of getting type 2 diabetes are:

  • being 45 years old or older
  • being overweight or obese
  • having a parent, sibling, or child with type 2 diabetes
  • having high blood pressure
  • not being physically active
  • being African American, Latino, Native American, Asian American, or Pacific Islander
  • having had diabetes while pregnant, called gestational diabetes
  • having a condition that leads to insulin resistance, like polycystic ovary syndrome
  • having heart disease
  • having high LDL cholesterol and triglycerides
  • having low HDL cholesterol
  • taking certain medications, including some HIV medications, glucocorticoids, thiazide diuretics, and atypical antipsychotics

 

Some of these things are out of your control, but others you can do something about. Take control of the things that you can. Staying a healthy weight and being active are major ways you can lower your risk of getting diabetes. So is managing other conditions like high blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

 

These things raise risk of type 2:

Being older, fatter, and if you mostly sit,

Even having close family with it,

Bad cholesterol and a bad heart, to name a few –

All these things raise risk of type 2.
