Exercising after having a baby has a lot of benefits, like:

  • Improving your heart health
  • Strengthening your pelvic floor muscles
  • Helping to manage stress and anxiety
  • Helping you lose that baby weight
  • Reducing your chances of getting post-partum depression

After having a baby, your life can get really busy and tiring. Taking care of a baby all day and night can be exhausting, especially when you are also dealing with changes like breastfeeding and lack of sleep. But it’s important to take care of yourself too! And one great way to do that is by exercising.

Doctors recommend that you do 2 hours and 30 minutes of exercise every week. This can be broken out however you’d like. For example, you could exercise for 30 minutes, 5 days each week. Or you could do 1 hour, 3 days each week. Whatever works best for you. And remember – exercise can be as simple as walking your baby in the baby carriage. No need to go to the gym, buy memberships, or buy special equipment.

Here are some reasons why exercising after having a baby is helpful and important:

Improve heart health – Exercising regularly, whether you do a little or a lot, can keep your heart healthy.

Strengthen your pelvic floor muscles – Having a baby can make your pelvic floor muscles weak, which can sometimes make it hard to control your bladder. But exercises like Kegels can help make them strong again. They can also help with lower stomach pain, which sometimes happens after childbirth.

Help to manage stress and anxiety – Having a baby can be stressful. Regular exercise can help you feel calmer and less stressed.

Help with weight loss – Exercising can help you lose any baby weight you may have gained during pregnancy.

Reducing post-partum depression – New moms are at risk for getting postpartum depression. This can make it even harder to take care of yourself and your baby. Exercise lowers the risk of getting postpartum depression.

Exercising is a way of showing love to yourself so you can be strong and healthy for yourself and your baby. Even just a little bit of exercise done regularly can make a big difference! So keep moving and taking care of yourself.
