Most types of salt have the same effect on blood pressure. The exception is low-sodium salt, which doesn’t affect blood pressure as much.

Almost all kinds of salt, whether naturally made or regular table salt, have the same effect on blood pressure. That’s because most kinds of salt have about the same amount of sodium in them. Sodium is the part of salt that can increase blood pressure.

Some people think that natural salts like sea salt or pink Himalayan salt are better for your blood pressure than regular table salt. Studies show that this is not true. No matter what type of salt you use, you get the same amount of sodium, which increases your risk the same amount.

Grind Size

Depending on how the salt is ground up, some kinds of salt may have less sodium per teaspoon. This is because if the salt is in big chunks or flakes, less of it can fit in a teaspoon. If you compare different kinds of salt by weight instead, they have the about same amount of sodium in them.

Low-Sodium Salt

The exception is low-sodium salt. Some kinds of salt replace some sodium with potassium. These salts have less sodium in them, so they don’t affect blood pressure as much. But the extra potassium in low-sodium salt can cause some side effects, like increasing the risk of getting kidney problems. Talk to your doctor before you try low-sodium salt.

For the most part salt is the same, regardless of name!
