The only way to know for sure if you have high blood pressure is to get your blood pressure checked. High blood pressure usually does not cause symptoms. So, many people don’t know they have it. Blood pressure at or above 130/80 is high according to most experts.

Your doctor will measure your blood pressure on several days or visits to find out if your blood pressure stays high over time. Your doctor may also ask you to take and track your blood pressure at home.

You are considered to have high blood pressure if:

  • Your top number is usually 130 or higher
  • Your bottom number is usually 80 or higher

The higher your blood pressure, the higher your risk of having a heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure.
